The images featured in “Changes in the Landscape of Downtown Durham, 1950-2000” were shot by Durham, North Carolina, businessman and pharmacist Ralph Rogers. The site features more than 300 slides, grouped geographically, that show many of the buildings that came down over the fifty-year period, what replaced them, and how the streetscape changed. Many of the frames include audio by Mr. Rogers, describing in more detail what you are seeing on the screen. Click on the MP3 Audio button to hear these descriptions. Ralph Rogers is a native Durhamite who, along with his father, operated Rogers Drug Company at the corner of Parrish and Mangum streets for 50 years.
If you are interested in obtaining a photographic reprint, a scan, or permission to use any of the images on these web pages, please contact the North Carolina Collection librarian.

Ralph Rogers, retired Durham businessman, donated his slides to the North Carolina Collection and worked with volunteers and staff to compose the caption for each slide. Alex Kostelnik, North Carolina Collection volunteer, scanned the slides and interviewed Mr. Rogers for the audio that accompanies the images. Allen Dew, computer consultant and North Carolina Collection volunteer, assembled all the components and developed the web pages. Lynn Richardson, North Carolina Collection librarian, coordinated the project and edited the slide captions and other site content.
