The Durham Historic Photographic Archives consist of around 1500 images depicting the history of Durham from 1860 to the mid-1900s. Many of these photographs were collected by PhotoCarolina, a nonprofit organization formed in the mid-1980s for the express purpose of preserving Durham’s history in photographs. If you are interested in obtaining a photographic reprint, a scan, or permission to use any of the images on these web pages, please contact the North Carolina Collection librarian.
Photographs may be viewed in three ways. Acknowledgments for this collection
John Ansley, former North Carolina Collection librarian, secured the funding and directed the project to digitize the Durham Historic Photographic Archives. Scott Reavis, student, scanned the photographs. Allen Dew, computer consultant and North Carolina Collection volunteer, developed a database to store all the caption information, assembled all the components, and developed the web pages. Frances Evans, North Carolina Collection volunteer, entered the captions and other data into the photographic database and added keywords to make searching the database easier.
